Chapter Nine

Kevin

Northern Alaska

I halt at the entrance to the hospital and let Rory down. The guard is noticeably absent. He must have joined the others to ensure the safety of the facility.

As we reach the door, Private Kells waves her Holowatch at the scanner and we’re allowed to enter. From a seat in front of a table laden with microscopes and other medical equipment, Doctor Turner springs to her feet.

“We’re leaving now!” I proclaim.

“No, we can’t leave,” Dr. Turner says.

The curtain to Femy’s ward opens, and a pale and tense-looking Mary steps out.

“Mommy!” Rory screams and runs across the room, crashing into her legs.

“They say the base is under attack,” Mary says, with Rory clutching to her legs. “We’re under attack from what?”

“We need to leave!” I insist.

“The major told us to take cover here! We can’t defy orders like that. Let’s just lock up and let the soldiers deal with it.”

“If we do that, we’ll be cornered.” I point at the doorway. “As for the Trappers, that door won’t keep them out.”

As Femy emerges from the curtained-off space, Luke enters from the hallway. “Kevin[MG6]?”

Femy blinks his eyes. “Dad?”

Kells peeps outside, sidearm ready. She shakes her head and walks towards us. “It’s clear right now, but how long that lasts is anyone’s guess.”

Mary looks back and forth between us. “What would we do then?”

“Chopper,” Kells says.

“You can fly?” I ask, incredulous.

“We need to get a pilot.”

“Wait a moment,” Luke interrupts. “Why are we under attack?”

I hesitate

“The Villein,” Luke says,

“Who?” Mary asks.

“The alien! Right now he’s being held captive in the lab. He needs to come with us. He must be a target.”

“Or they could have tracked the scanner.”

My eyes widen as realization shoots through me. Perhaps the Trappers have been tracking us all along. The old scanner the major had in his desk woke up when ours got close to it.

If that’s the case, then Major York should have seen the danger it posed to the base. Sleep deprivation might be messing with my ability to think. My mind is foggy as hell. What was York’s justification?

“There must be a way to disable it,” I say. “It’s in York’s quarters, so let’s go get it.”

“So they can keep tracking us?” Kells asks.

“No, we can use this information against them. Track them and lead them away.”

“Except, they might be here because of the Villein,” Luke chips in.

I scowl as my thoughts race to balance competing priorities. “Where’s the nearest chopper?” I ask, looking between Luke and Dr. Turner.

“There’s one up on the roof,” Luke says.

“Meet us there with the alien.”

Luke gives a nod and turns to Dr. Turner.

“We have no idea if you’re infected,” she says.

“I’ll take my chances,” Luke responds. “You’re on your own if you want to stay here.”

She shakes her head swiftly. “I’m coming.”

I nod to the private. “Kells, get us a pilot and get my family to the roof. You leave as soon as Luke arrives. Don’t stand around waiting for me.”

Kells gives a doubtful nod. “Where are you going?”

“The major’s quarters.
